Second only to Vinegar for the amount of house hold tasks this heavy weight of the kitchen can take on. Baking soda is often looked over in favour of other more expensive items that do the same job for twice the price (if not more).
Being cheap environmentally friendly option that is safe to your children and pets, with no need for masks or gloves, makes a great choice for the family on a tight budget.
1. Polish Silver
Mixing 3 parts of baking soda with one part water you can make a paste that will clean your silverware beautifully, rub over you pieces with a soft cloth or a sponge and rinse and dry well when you are finished for a great shine.
2. Cleaning Your Oven
Sprinkle baking soda over the bottom of your oven spray with water to dampen all of it before leaving it sit overnight, in the morning scrub and remove the goop left with a cloth or vacuum before you rinse.
3. Home Made Air Freshener
Mix I cup of baking soda with three or four drops of your favourite oil, and place in an open bowl or vase for a great smelling room
4. New Life, For An old Mop
Before replacing your old mop give this a go,
Fill a bucket with a quarter of the way with water adding I cup of baking soda and one cup of salt leave your mop to soak over night. Rinse off in the morning and enjoy the use of your old mop a while longer.
5. Home Made General Cleaner
A 1/4 cup of water, four teaspoons of baking soda, and a half a cup of vinegar make a great all purpose cleaner, good for benches, walls and even floors.
OR
-4 tablespoons baking mixed with 1 quart warm water and shaken makes a great all purpose spray you can use on anything from the bathtub to the fridge
6. Cleaning the Toilet
A great paste to make at home to clean your toilet with is equal parts vinegar and baking soda, working wonders on the inside of our toilet.
7. Cleaning Gout
Sprinkle baking soda onto the gout and spray with white vinegar, leave to fizz for about 20 minutes or so scrub clean with an old toothbrush. Rinse off with water.
8. Carpet
To re freshen and remove odours form your carpets use Half a cup of cornstarch and half a cup of baking soda mixed together and sprinkle over your carpets leaving for the night before you vacuum in the morning. (I was nicely surprised by this one)
9. Washing Dishes
If you’re out of dish washing detergent, then simply add 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda and the juice of half a lemon to a sink full of hot water, for a great substitute

For pans that just won’t get clean no matter how much elbow grease you use.
Add some cold water and two tablespoons of baking soda; bring to the boil for a good five minutes before allowing it to cool and wiping it out
11. Cleaning the Fish tank
By using half a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar mixed with a cup of water you can remove the water and fish stains form your fish tank as well as the smells with just a few wipes of this solution. Rinse well
12. Cleaning JewelleryTo clean your jewellery, uses a paste again made up of 3 parts baking soda one part water and apply to jewellery allowing it to sit for a few minutes, rinse and wipe of with a soft cloth.
13. MoistureAnywhere where moisture or mold is a problem. Like under sinks, bathroom cupboards, place a bowl of baking soda to help absorb the excess moisture. Don’t forget to stir it once in a while for a longer effectiveness.
14. Fabric Softener
Make your own and save some money by mixing equal amounts of water, Vinegar and baking soda in a bottle. When using it in the wash add 1/4 of a cup to your load to get the best results.
Note: vinegar and baking soda can fizz when added together.
